Is just keeping resolutions enough?

New Year, new resolutions, right? The same old tradition. I always wondered why we keep these resolutions when, in the end, we do not follow them and fall into our reckless ways. At least, that has always been the case with me.

Mostly, goals are a traditional one-size-fits-all approach. Going to the gym, eating healthy, travelling the world and even trying a new skill might add to your list.

But is it really necessary to have yearly goals in life?

I'm not going to lie; I’ve actually felt pressured to make these “yearly resolutions”, if not good, while actively trying to fit into the culture.

People can have different goals depending on their purpose in life. I strongly believe my purpose in life is what my heart says I should do.

I have always struggled with constant anxiety, and because of that, I found it hard to start with something new. I always felt comfortable with the way I am. I never took risks; I never went out of my comfort zone. Which made me think…..

What is my purpose? What does my heart say? What do I do when I’m idle? There must be some calling.

Except, there was none.

I tried so hard to please my family, friends, and even society to fit in, to make them realise I did what they thought I could never have done.

I tried so many things and ended up failing their expectations. But I don’t feel guilty anymore.

Instead,

I became mindful of what I was. I realised trying things out that I wasn’t meant for isn't so bad. I realised I was not a failure.

Passion. Following our passion and knowing what our heart wants only comes when we try things we don’t want.

Also,

I started appreciating early mornings. (I was not a morning person.)

I started doing yoga. (I never worked out in my life.)

I started taking baby steps after constantly giving up on all my endeavours.

I started to appreciate and be grateful for small things in my life.

I started to understand and give more time to my family.

I started to have a passion for what I do.

I turned 24 now, and I’m still trying to figure out what I want in my life. So far, I have come to realise I love writing.

In a world where individuality reigns supreme, I think redefining what New Year’s resolutions mean should be at the top of the pyramid. It’s not about conforming to a certain lifestyle; rather, it should be about crafting resolutions that align with the unique purpose each of us holds in our lives.

Take your time. It’s not the end of the world.

And be loving and passionate.
